Funded by Cancer Research UK and published in the BMC Medical Journal, the study set out to discover if smokers were more or less motivated to quit smoking if they were exposed to e cigarettes, concluding that indeed smokers who are exposed to vaping are highly motivated to quit smoking or have made a recent attempt to quit smoking.

With an estimated 3.2 million vapers in the UK, the study funded by Cancer Research UK was initially meeting concerns that the surge in popularity of e cigarettes were renormalizing attitudes to smoking. Alas, the opposite is true, and the conclusions that smokers who have friends that vape are 20% more likely to attempt to quit smoking only go to reinforce the positive influence that vaping can have on smokers’ lives.
In 2015 Public Health England declared e cigarettes to be up to 95% less harmful than smoking tobacco and that vaping has the potential to help smokers quit and become smoke-free .
