Does Vaping Affect Your Pets?

22nd Aug 2019

Woman on mountain with dog Everyone responsible pet owner loves their animals and would do anything to prevent them from coming to harm. While it’s easy to be aware of the potential risks of vaping, it’s important to know how vaping could affect your animals and where you could potentially make changes to ensure your beloved animals stay safe and sound.

What are the risks of second hand Vapor?

Since first appearing on the market in 2003, vaporizers have been subject to tests and studies in an effort to determine potential hazards to long-term users. While most long-term research shows the dangers posed by conventional cigarettes, there are few longitudinal medical studies about the long-term risks of vaping and, in particular, the problems with second hand smoke . Smoking around friends and family in enclosed spaces can be a genuine concern. This goes double for pets, who face the same risks as humans alongside their smaller lung capacity and higher metabolism. While governmental research has estimated that that e cigarettes are up to 95% less harmful than conventional cigarettes, it’s often better to take precautions when it comes to the things that you love. While stopping entirely may be a viable – albeit, nuclear - option, there are a bunch of simple steps you can take to make sure that your pets stay safe, sound and healthy for years to come.

What can I change?

While vaping around your animals is broadly safe, it’s important to be informed about some simple tricks that can keep them safe. These include:

Being a cautious cat: Felines are especially vulnerable to a range of chemicals that would be otherwise reasonably safe for us to consume such as THC or nicotine. Switching to a vaporizer can help keep your emissions down and ensure your pet’s exposure is minimised. Always try to ensure that the utmost care is taken not to excessively vape around your cat if you are using a nicotine product and always let them chase your clouds in a well-ventilated area.

Enjoying some fresh air: Make sure that you ventilate your home so that your pet has the best air quality. This can be as simple as opening windows, turning on a fan, or vaping in your garden or at door leading outside. As we tend to stay stationary when we vape, smokers’ dogs can often become overweight or unfit. The next time you’re vaping, maybe take them outside for a brief walk – helping you stay in shape and letting your pet get some valuable exercise.

Having an emergency plan: Sadly, accidents do happen and if your dog is hurt or poisoned, through accidental exposure to your e-liquid, it’s essential that you have an action plan. At a minimum, this should involve regular pet insurance and knowing where your nearest emergency vet is. This can quickly and effectively let you treat your pet and minimise harm to your animal and make worry overpaying for emergency treatment and surgeries a thing of the past.

Taking care: Make sure that any of your devices or cartridges are kept away from your animals. The smell of vaping materials or e liquids can be very tempting to a hungry hound or curious cat and, before long, your pet can break into cartridges and cause serious harm. This can result in poisoning or damage to their mouths or stomachs from broken glass. Picking up a sturdy e-liquid carry case to keep your e-juice safe can help dissuade your pet and avoid accidents from spills and breakages.
